How to cancel Microsoft OneDrive
The steps depend on WHERE you subscribed — directly, through your phone, internet or TV provider, or in an app store. Below are all the ways this service is sold and how to end each one.
Renewal and canceling
Microsoft 365 subscriptions renew automatically at the regular price and selected term unless canceled in your Microsoft account. The free month also turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel.
Monthly or yearly
Yearly saves up to 17%, according to Microsoft.
One-time alternative
Office Home 2024 is a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac.
Cancel in your Microsoft account
That’s where Microsoft says to stop renewal.
Extra OneDrive storage comes with a Microsoft 365 subscription — Basic, Personal, Family or Premium — so canceling paid OneDrive means canceling Microsoft 365. The free 5 GB stays.
If you bought from Microsoft
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 and sign in with the Microsoft account you used to buy the subscription.
- Select Cancel subscription — it may say Upgrade or Cancel.
- Read the Please review section at the top of the page; it may suggest cheaper alternatives.
- At the bottom, select I don’t want my subscription to cancel, or I want to keep my benefits to keep it.
If you don’t see a cancel option but do see Turn on recurring billing, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown. You won’t be charged after that date and can use it until then.
If someone else bills you
- Google Play or the Apple App Store — contact their support to cancel or for a refund.
- A retailer such as Amazon — contact that retailer to manage the subscription and billing.
What changes after canceling
Your storage goes back to 5 GB of cloud storage (OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments) and 15 GB of Outlook.com mail storage. On Microsoft 365 Family or Premium, everyone you shared with also loses the extra storage.
If you or the people you shared with use more than the free allowance:
- you can’t upload, edit or sync new files to OneDrive;
- you can’t send or receive email in Outlook.com;
- after 6 months, Microsoft may delete your OneDrive and its files.
Refunds
Not every cancellation gets a refund. For a subscription bought from Microsoft, you have to cancel first to see whether you’re eligible.
