How to cancel Netflix

The steps depend on WHERE you subscribed — directly, through your phone, internet or TV provider, or in an app store. Below are all the ways this service is sold and how to end each one.

Canceling

You can cancel Netflix at any time, but only one way: on the page where you manage your membership. Netflix notes separately that signing out or deleting the app doesn’t cancel the account.

Cancel

On the Manage your membership page, choose Cancel, then Finish Cancellation. Netflix sends a confirmation to the email on the account.

If you pay through a provider

If Netflix is on your bill or in a package from a partner — in the US Netflix names Cox, Comcast Xfinity, DirecTV, Dish, Frontier, Optimum, Spectrum, T-Mobile and Verizon — you cancel with that partner, and the price and extra members can differ.

Signing out isn’t canceling

Netflix says it plainly: the only way to cancel the account and end the membership is through the membership page. Signing out or deleting the app doesn’t cancel anything — the account and the payments stay.

Three steps

  1. Go to the Manage your membership page (sign in if needed).
  2. Select Cancel.
  3. Under Cancel, select Finish Cancellation.

That’s it. Netflix sends a confirmation email to the address on the account — if it doesn’t arrive, the cancellation probably didn’t go through.

What many people don’t know

Netflix says it in a separate note, and it’s the most common misunderstanding: signing out of your account or deleting the Netflix app doesn’t cancel your account. Payments continue until you’ve gone through the steps above.

If you don’t see an option to cancel

Then you most likely pay through a partner. In the US, Netflix names Cox, Comcast Xfinity, DirecTV, Dish, Frontier, Optimum, Spectrum, T-Mobile and Verizon as partners that add Netflix to a bill or include it in a package. In that case you cancel with the partner.

Downloads after canceling

Downloads on your devices are deleted when you cancel. If you rejoin, you’ll need to download them again.
