How to cancel ChatGPT

The steps depend on WHERE you subscribed — directly, through your phone, internet or TV provider, or in an app store. Below are all the ways this service is sold and how to end each one.

Canceling and refunds

Cancel where you subscribed: on chatgpt.com in Settings → Billing, or through Apple or Google Play subscriptions. Canceling stops future renewals; paid features last until the end of the billing period.

Monthly plans

Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge.

Bought in the app

Apple handles cancellations and refunds for App Store purchases.

Refunds are discretionary

OpenAI says payments are generally non-refundable; an unused subscription may be refunded if you ask within seven days of the charge.

  1. Open your account menu and select Settings.
  2. Select Billing.
  3. Under Cancel plan, select Cancel and confirm.

Subscribed on iPhone or iPad

Apple manages the subscription: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription. If only an expiration date is shown, it’s already canceled.

Subscribed through Google Play

In the Play Store app, open Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel subscription, signed in with the Google account you paid with.

Three things that catch people out

  • Uninstalling the app doesn’t cancel the subscription.
  • Deleting your ChatGPT account doesn’t cancel an Apple subscription — cancel with Apple first.
  • Subscribing on a second platform (say, the web after the app) creates a second charge.

When it ends

Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date. After an ordinary cancellation, paid features stay until the end of the billing period.

Refunds

OpenAI says payments are generally non-refundable. For an unused individual subscription, a refund may be available if you ask within seven days of the charge, through the chat widget in the Help Center while signed in to the charged account. Forgetting to cancel or changing your mind doesn’t qualify on its own. If a refund is granted, access covered by it usually ends. App Store charges are refunded only by Apple.
