Game subscriptions in the US: Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo through their users’ eyes (2026)
Updated October 15, 2026 · Published October 15, 2026
Game subscriptions don’t have App Store reviews of their own. What does get reviewed are the companion apps — Xbox, PlayStation App and Nintendo Switch App — which handle friends, chat, clips and remote downloads. Only a small share of those reviews talk about Game Pass, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online themselves.
So this page does two things. It says who each subscription is for, from the companies’ US pages, and it sums up what users wrote about the apps and the subscriptions in App Store reviews from April to October 2026. Prices are on each subscription’s page on this site and in the games category.
The short version
- The companion apps are used for clips, friends and remote downloads, and their most common complaints are about those same features breaking.
- PlayStation Plus price increases are the one subscription topic that comes up repeatedly.
- The Nintendo Switch App is the lowest-rated of the three (3.1 stars overall); reviewers like its game-specific tools and say it can’t do much else.
Subscription by subscription
[Xbox Game Pass](/prenumeratos/xbox-game-pass)
For you if you want a large game library on Xbox or PC. Essential, Premium and Ultimate include online multiplayer, a library of 50+, 200+ or 500+ games, and 5, 10 or 15 hours of cloud play a month; Ultimate adds new games on day one, EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. PC Game Pass has 300+ PC games with day-one releases but no cloud gaming.
What the app’s reviewers say: many love saving clips to the phone and chatting with friends without the console, and several say they chose Xbox over PlayStation. The most common complaint is party chat — disconnects, no sound, AirPods not working — followed by the app freezing or failing to turn the console on. Only about one review in twenty mentions Game Pass at all.
[PlayStation Plus](/prenumeratos/playstation-plus)
For you if you play online on PS5 or PS4 — Essential covers online multiplayer, monthly games and cloud saves. Extra adds the Game Catalog of hundreds of games; Premium adds the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and cloud streaming. Every tier can be bought for 1, 3 or 12 months.
What the app’s reviewers say: people use it for clips, friends and downloading games remotely. Several reviewers write that PlayStation Plus has become too expensive and that they’re reconsidering it. The app complaints are about slow clip uploads (many), being signed out and messages not sending (several). Many recent one-star reviews are about Sony’s company decisions rather than the app.
The PlayStation App’s overall rating is 4.2, and its recent reviews are more negative still.
[Nintendo Switch Online](/prenumeratos/nintendo-switch-online)
For you if you play Nintendo games online: the membership covers online play, cloud saves and classic NES, Super NES and Game Boy games; the Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, GameCube, Game Boy Advance and SEGA Genesis classics plus select Switch 2 upgrade packs and DLC. Family memberships cover up to 8 Nintendo Accounts. Nintendo’s support page lists the Individual membership for 1, 3 or 12 months; Family and the Expansion Pack are yearly.
What the app’s reviewers say: they like its game tools — Zelda Notes, SplatNet 3, NookLink — and moving screenshots to the phone. Complaints are about Zelda Notes not loading or showing wrong progress (several), and the app doing little else: no browsing or buying games, and some features only for members (several).
What the reviews have in common
The apps are companions, not stores or consoles. Reviewers of all three praise the same things — clips, friends, remote control — and complain when those break after an update.
Price is a PlayStation topic. Among the three, only PlayStation Plus draws repeated complaints about price in recent reviews.
Before you subscribe
- Pick by the console you have. None of these subscriptions works on another company’s console.
- Check cloud gaming hours if you plan to stream: Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate include 5, 10 or 15 hours a month; PC Game Pass has none.
- Try a short term first. PlayStation Plus sells every tier for 1 month, and Nintendo Switch Online’s Individual membership comes as 1 or 3 months too.
All of them side by side, with current prices, are in the games category.
